It was great to have a winner in Doctor Phoenix on Saturday at Uttoxeter where the 7yo Dr Massini gelding landed the Betfred “Racing’s Biggest Supporter” “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle on Midlands Grand National day.
Ridden by Gavin Sheehan who had enjoyed a World Hurdle victory just two days earlier aboard Cole Harden at the Cheltenham festival, Doctor Phoenix was always handy before taking up the running two from home to hang on by a head on very testing ground.
This welcome victory came the day after Roman Flight lined up in The County Hurdle at Cheltenham and was running a big race before falling at the last. The Antonius Pius gelding had travelled well throughout and was giving a great account of himself in a huge field of 24 before unfortunately parting company with Noel Fehily at the final flight.
Roman Flight will head to Aintree next for a stab at the big handicap hurdle due to take place immediately after the Grand National.
Norse Light also ran pleasingly at Uttoxeter finishing 3rd under yard conditional Shane Quinlan in the Betfred “Treble Odds On Lucky 15′s” Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
Monday saw a winning return from Marju’s Quest at Taunton after a Winter break. The Marju 5yo who racked up a hat trick of victories under A P McCoy last Summer was this time partnered by Noel Fehily to win the Bathwick Tyres Bridgwater Handicap Hurdle by 5 lengths having led from flag fall.
Another who ran well at Taunton yesterday was Final Nudge who finished 2nd under Aidan Coleman on his hurdling debut in the Bathwick Tyres Midsomer Norton “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle.
The 6yo Kayf Tara is a lovely horse who is sure to show plenty of improvement again from gaining more experience over obstacles.
My Mo did also not disgrace himself yesterday when making the journey to Chelmsford City to finish 3rd over a mile ridden by Fergus Sweeney.
We have Lucky Jim running at Wetherby today (Tuesday 17th) who we hope can continue the spell of good runs when he lines up in the 4.40 under Gavin Sheehan & Tyre Hill is declared at Haydock tomorrow (Wednesday 18th) along with yard debutant Wade Harper.
